Japan is in a state of atomic emergency as a cooling system fails at one nuclear reactor, and a fire rages in another. A fire broke out earlier in the turbine building of Onagawa nuclear plant in Miyagi Prefecture, the Kyodo News reported. ...An administrator at the Tohoku Electric Power Co, which operates at the facility, has admitted the process to repair the cooling reactor is “not going as planned.” The company asked people nearby to stay calm, the official TV news channel NHK reported. Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the nuclear power plant in Fukushima developed a mechanical failure in the cooling system. Efforts are underway to cool the reactor after it was shut down after the earthquake. He said there was no radiation leak. The four Japanese nuclear power plants closest to the epicenter of the quake have been safely shut down, the United Nations atomic watchdog has said.

Problema sa hladjenjem ima jos jedan reaktor.

However TepCo [the Tokyo Electric Power Company] appeared in a news conference and promised to release new radioactivity readi...ngs after 6pm. It is now 7.30pm and they have not done so. People are getting extremely frustrated at the lack of news coming from TepCo and the government - they have yet to confirm if the building that suffered an explosion housed a reactor, and we have no indication how much radiation has been released or in what direction winds are blowing."

I što sada? :(

Situation Update No. 9
...On 12.03.2011 at 10:54 GMT+2

An explosion destroyed the roof and walls of Japan's quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, and people nearby are being warned to stay indoors. Radioactivity at the plant was 20 times over the normal level, and Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission earlier said it may be experiencing meltdown. Several workers were reported to be injured in the explosion -- one seriously -- and smoke was seen billowing out of the plant. Eyewitnesses reported strong shaking at the plant shortly before the blast. "A seriously injured worker is still trapped in the crane operating console of the exhaust stack and his breathing and pulse cannot be confirmed. Currently, rescue efforts are under way," nuclear company TEPCO said in a statement. About 45,000 people who live within six miles (10 kilometers) of the No. 1 plant were told to evacuate Saturday. Parts of the reactor's nuclear fuel rods were briefly exposed to the air after cooling water levels dropped through evaporation, and efforts were earlier being made to pump water into the reactor at the site, which is 160 miles (250 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo. Radioactivity at the plant was 20 times over the normal level, and Japan's Nuclear Safety Commission has said it may be experiencing meltdown.

Situation Update No. 8
On 12.03.2011 at 10:05 GMT+2

An explosion sent white smoke rising above at a nuclear plant where a massive earthquake and tsunami crippled cooling systems in northeastern Japan's Fukushima prefecture, Japanese public broadcaster NHK said Saturday, citing the country's nuclear and industrial safety agency. The Tokyo Electric Company said four workers on the ground were injured, NHK reported. It was not immediately clear where the blast occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, or what caused it. One expert said the explosion was "clearly a serious situation," but may not be related to problems inside the plant's nuclear reactor. Other effects of the tsunami may have caused the blast, said Malcolm Grimston, associate fellow for energy, environment and development at London's Chatham House. "It's clearly a serious situation, but that in itself does not necessarily mean major (nuclear) contamination," he said.

NHK said the injured workers were in the process of cooling a nuclear reactor at the plant by injecting water into its core. Earlier Saturday Japan's nuclear agency said workers were continuing efforts to cool fuel rods at the plant after a small amount of radioactive material escaped into the air. The agency said there was a strong possibility that the radioactive cesium monitors detected was caused by the melting of a fuel rod at the plant, adding that engineers were continuing to cool the fuel rods by pumping water around them. A spokesman for Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Agency earlier said atomic material had seeped out of one of the five nuclear reactors at the Daiichi plant, located about 160 miles (260 kilometers) north of Tokyo. Authorities evacuated people living near the reactor after an earthquake and tsunami crippled cooling systems there, as well as at another of the Tokyo Electric Power Company's nuclear plants. The evacuations notwithstanding, the nuclear safety agency asserted Saturday that the radiation at the plants did not pose an immediate threat to nearby residents' health, the Kyodo News Agency said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said Friday on its website that the quake and tsunami knocked out a Daiichi reactor's off-site power source, which is used to cool down the radioactive material inside. Then, the tsunami waves disabled the backup source -- diesel generators -- and authorities were working to get these operating. On Saturday Japanese nuclear authorities said the cooling system had also failed at three of the four reactors at the Fukushima Daini plant -- located in another town in northeaster Japan's Fukushima prefecture. Janie Eudy told CNN that her 52-year-old husband, Joe, was working at the Daiichi plant and was injured by falling and shattering glass when the quake struck. As he and others were planning to evacuate, at their managers' orders, the tsunami waves struck and washed buildings from the nearby town past the plant. "To me, it sounded like hell on earth," she said, adding her husband -- a native of Pineville, Louisiana -- ultimately escaped.

The power company reported Saturday that about 1 million households were without power, and that power shortages may occur due to damage at the company's facility."We kindly ask our customers to cooperate with us in reducing usage of power," the company said.Vidi više

It has already been pouring water into reactors No 1 and 3 to try to cool them.1304A reminder that Japan's nuclear safety agency rates the incident at level 4 on a scale of 1-7. Friends and Family of USS Ronald Reagan:

I want to take this opportunity to personally assure you that first and foremost all personnel aboard the USS Ronald Reagan are safe and healthy.

During our mission to assist our close allies of Japan, we were operating near the radioactive plume from Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. As you may have already heard, radioactivity was detected on 17 personnel from our ship, however, we promptly took the proper precautions and the radioactivity was easily removed by using soap and water. The levels that were detected were very low levels. To put this into perspective, the maximum radiation dose received was equalt to the amount of natural background radiation one would receive in one month from sources such as rocks, soil and the sun.

Ronald Reagan has since repositioned away from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant.

As a nuclear-powered aircraft carrrier, we have extensive technical expertise onboard to properly monitor such types of risks, and if necessary, rapidly resolve the situation.

We have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure that everyone is safe. We have closely monitored spaces, evaluated everyone who has flown or worked on the flight deck and cleaned the aircraft.

I have not seen any levels of radiation or contamination that would cause me to have any significant concerns at all.

As we continue to assist Japan in this terrible catastrophe, our Sailor's--and your loves ones'-- safety will remain at the top of my priority list.

Capt. Thom Burke

Dali ovi pederski mediji spominju reaktor 3?

Reactor unit 3

Unlike the other five reactor units, reactor 3 runs on mixed uranium and plutonium oxide, or MOX fuel, making it potentially more dangerous in an incident due to the neutronic effects of plutonium on the reactor and the carcinogenic effects in the event of release to the environment.
